4 Nissa Croisieres speedboat

Nissa Croisieres speedboat tour along the French Riviera

A 12-metre semi-rigid with 700 horsepower. You cover more coastline than any other tour: Cap de Nice, Villefranche, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, sometimes Beaulieu. The ride is loud and bumpy. You will get splashed. There's a swimming stop in a sheltered cove halfway through. Bachelor groups love this one, but it works for anyone who finds regular boat tours too slow.

5 AMC Cape Grace catamaran

AMC Cape Grace maxi-catamaran anchored in Mediterranean bay

A maxi-catamaran called the Mayba. Big deck, nets stretched over the water to lie on, and a slower pace than everything else on this list. Half-day or full-day. The route changes by season: Esterel calanques in summer, Monaco coastline in spring. If you want to spend a full afternoon on the water without paying for a private charter, this is the move. Lunch is available on board for the full-day option.

6 Private charter with skipper

Private boat charter with skipper in a secluded cove near Nice

For 4 to 10 people. You pick the route. Most skippers will suggest heading east to Villefranche and Beaulieu (calmer water, better coves) or west towards Antibes and the Lerins islands. Prices swing wildly depending on boat size and time of year. In July and August, book at least two weeks ahead or you'll find nothing decent left. Check Click & Boat or ask at the agencies along the port.

Practical tips

  • Season: May to October. September is the sweet spot: warm water, fewer people, better prices.
  • Bring: Sunscreen (reef-safe if snorkeling), sunglasses, hat, light jacket for sunset tours, waterproof phone pouch.
  • Seasickness: The Med is calm in summer. Worried? Pick a big boat (Trans Cote d'Azur or the catamaran). Skip the speedboat.
  • Booking: 2 to 3 days ahead in June. 1 to 2 weeks in July/August. Most operators refund if you cancel 24h before.
  • Getting there: Tram Line 2, stop "Port Lympia," drops you at the quay. Parking Saleya or Parking du Port if driving.
