Why Grasse is worth the trip

Grasse has been making perfume since the 1600s, when its tanneries switched from leather to scented gloves and never looked back. The hills around town still grow the jasmine, rose and tuberose that go into some of the world’s most famous fragrances. It is compact, walkable and full of character, which makes it the perfect break from the beach: cooler air, old stone streets, and a craft you can actually take part in.

The real draw is that most of it is hands-on and often free. You can tour a working perfumery, learn how a scent is built, and then sit down with a “nose” and blend a bottle that is entirely yours. Do that in the morning and you are back on the coast for lunch.

The three great perfume houses

Grasse’s three historic maisons all offer free factory tours and paid make-your-own-perfume workshops. Here is how they differ.

Getting to Grasse from Nice & Cannes

Grasse sits in the hills above Cannes, so it is an easy half-day from the coast. From Cannes it is about 30 minutes by car; from Nice, roughly 45 minutes to an hour. There is a train too (the line runs via Cannes, about an hour from Nice), which drops you a short uphill walk or quick bus from the old town.

The smoothest option, especially for a group or if you want to fit in a workshop and be back for lunch, is a private transfer with a driver: door to door, no parking on Grasse’s steep streets, and you set the pace.
